MANHATTAN — Manhattanites finally got a much-needed break Wednesday from a 10-day long heat wave as temperatures hovered in the high 70s.
Forecasters predict the high temperature to be a pleasant 80 degrees in the city on Wednesday, a far cry from the sweltering temperatures residents suffered through earlier in the week.
The miserably hot and humid weather included several 90-plus degree days and prompted Con Edison to ask Upper West Side residents to conserve power by turning off "non-essential" appliances — even as New Yorkers ran air conditioners at full blast in an attempt to cool off.
Temperatures broke daily records at LaGuardia and JFK Airports on Monday climbing to 96 and 98 degrees respectively, the National Weather Service reported.
The milder weather is expected to last through the end of the week with highs in the upper 70s and low 80s through Friday, according to the NWS.
The start of July, typically the hottest month of the year, and the Fourth of July weekend will see the heat return. The thermometer is expected to climb into the mid 80s on Saturday and back above 90 on Sunday and Monday.
