The dream is over.
Team USA's fairytale run in soccer's World Cup came to an end Saturday in the third minute of extra time when a Ghanan goal broke a 1-1 tie.
Despite putting up a gritty fight typical of the US squad throughout the tournament, this time the 2-1 lead was too much.
The loss devastated fans packed into Manhattan bars who were hoarse from cheering on their team through 90 minutes of regular time - and another 30 added minutes.
"I don't want to start about how sad I am," said Adam Blump, 23, who watched the game on the Upper East Side.
"I think it's sad," said Danielle Ostrow, 29. "I think Ghana played dirty and were a bunch of crybabies."
Landon Donovan had kept fans' hopes alive with an equalizer from a penalty in the 62nd minute.
But, in the final stages of the World Cup, games can't be tied, and the US squad couldn't find a second goal.
Team USA's run in the competition, which saw them qualify at the top of their group, has packed city bars and electrified fans - including many who'd previously had no interest in soccer.
