MANHATTAN — Giants rookie Chad Jones was severely hurt early Friday morning after he drove his SUV into a streetcar pole in New Orleans, several outlets reported.
It took 20 minutes to remove the 21-year-old LSU sports star from the mangled SUV, which crashed around 6:15 a.m., injuring Jones and two others, the New York Daily News said.
While the extent of Jones' injuries is not yet known, a CBS affiliate reported a fractured leg with exposed nerves and arteries.
He was undergoing surgery at 10:15 a.m., the paper said.
As an undergraduate, Jones excelled in both football and basketball, ending his college career with 158 tackles. He served as a relief pitcher for LSU during the baseball team's 2009 College World Series win, the News said.
He had been offered a spot with the Houston Astros in 2007 and 2010, but chose to sign with the Giants earlier this month for an estimated $2.6 million over four years, the paper noted.
Team spokesman Pat Hanlon told the paper that they were still gathering information about the accident.
