MANHATTAN — For the second time this month, Mets pitcher Hisanori Takahashi looked unstoppable against his team's crosstown rival as the Mets took the first game in the Subway Series Friday, topping the struggling Yankees 4-0.
It was the Mets’ eighth straight win and it put them just half a game behind the first-place Braves in the NL East.
"It's been a fun ride," Jose Reyes told reporters after the win. "Hopefully it can continue."
For the Yankees, the loss was just another mark on what's been a challenging week, marked by losses to a 47-year-old pitcher, a rookie pitcher and what's seemingly been a team-wide batting drought with only four runs scored in the last three games.
With Tampa Bay also falling on Friday, they still remain tied for first in the AL East. But an offensive drought is leaving fans and stars restless for a change in pace in the Bronx.
The Bronx Bombers didn't put a runner in scoring position until the sixth inning when Nick Swisher and Mark Teixiera managed to sneak on with one out. Alex Rodriguez, with the chance to drive them home, managed a grounder down the third base line for an out. Then Robinson Cano struck a bouncy grounder for out number three.
"It's very frustrating," Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez told reporters. "Obviously, if you can't score runs, you're not going to win."
The two teams meet again on Saturday at 1:05 p.m.
