MANHATTAN — New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg revealed plans for a fatherhood-services coordinator on Thursday as part of an initiative to encourage dads to be more active in their children's lives.
City agencies plan to offer parenting classes at homeless shelters and at public hospitals as well as publishing a guide to city services available to fathers, the Wall Street Journal reported.
"Strong families make a strong New York. But too many children in this city are growing up without their fathers," said Mayor Bloomberg. The administration reports that 32 percent of all children under 17 in New York City grow up in a fatherless household.
"We want more children in our city to experience the encouragement, support and love of their fathers," said the mayor, the Journal reported.
"And that's why all city agencies will work to seize every opportunity to help fathers be a part of their children's lives."
