MANHATTAN — "Shrek Forever After" beat out "Sex and the City 2" at the box office this weekend, with the green ogre hauling in $55.7 million compared to $37.8 million earned by Carrie Bradshaw and her crew.
Shrek was the No. 1 movie in the nation for the second week in a row.
The Manhattan fashionista foursome came in at No. 2, barely edging out Jake Gyllenhaal's "Prince of Persia," which pulled in $37.1 million.
But the prince may vault over the ladies once the Memorial Day weekend's receipts are fully counted.
Many in Hollywood expected "Sex" to debut in first place, the Associated Press reported. Warner Bros. released the movie on Thursday, which may have eaten into its weekend numbers, the AP said.
The movie took in $14.2 million on Thursday, according to the AP. That puts it at $51.4 million after its first five days. The first "Sex" movie took home $56.8 million over that same time span in 2008.
But it's been bashed by critics since it premiered last week.
The full weekend box office totals will be released on Tuesday.
