LOWER MANHATTAN — State Sen. Daniel Squadron honored longtime lower Manhattan activist Catherine McVay Hughes in Albany on Tuesday during a Women’s History Month event.

Hughes, vice chairwoman of Community Board 1, has lived downtown for over 20 years, and since 9/11 has fought for a safe and speedy rebuilding of the neighborhood. As chairwoman of CB1’s World Trade Center Redevelopment Committee, she has advocated for safety improvements at the Deutsche Bank demolition and federal funding for post-9/11 healthcare, among many other causes.

Squadron selected Hughes as one of New York’s Contemporary Women of Distinction. Each senator picks a woman to recognize through the program, which is part of Women’s History Month.
