MANHATTAN — A mysterious good Samaritan helped save a woman from getting struck by the L train Monday night after she fainted and fell on to the tracks at Union Square, transit officials said.
The 26-year-old woman fell from the subway platform on to the Eighth Avenue-bound tracks around 7 p.m., just before a train arrived into the station, said James Anyansi, a spokesman NYC Transit.
An alert bystander who saw the fall jumped down to the track bed and was able to roll the woman in between the tracks before the train entered Union Square, Anyansi explained.
The man initially tried to lift the woman up to the platform but decided to place her in between the tracks when he saw the incoming train, the spokesman added.
“The train made a full entrance to the station,” Anyansi said. “It’s possible the train operator did not see the passenger there.”
The train did not strike the woman, he said.
The woman was transported to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition, police said.
Subway service was temporarily halted between Union Square and Bedford Avenue, but resumed shortly after 8 p.m, according to reports.
