MANHATTAN — After falling to their hometown rivals on Friday night, the Mets made it their business to beat the Yankees 5-3 in the second game of a three-game subway series on Saturday night.
Mets outfielder Jason Bay tied a career high with four hits for the evening and third baseman David Wright had a pair of RBI singles, both supporting a top notch performance by pitcher Mike Pelfrey.
Pelfrey, who allowed one run and six hits over six innings, told the New York Times, "It’s big, especially because it’s May, and we’ve got to get on track.”
Kevin Russo's bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning narrowed the Mets' lead to 5-2, and prompted Mets manager Jerry Manuel to come on to the field and replace Pelfrey with Francisco Rodriguez for the ninth.
K-Rod closed the game with a strike out against Francisco Cervelli with runners on first and third.
The Yankees left 13 runners on base to lead the Bronx Bombers to their fourth loss in five games.
