MANHATTAN — As if taking a 10-6 beating at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays wasn't bad enough, the Yankees also learned Wednesday night they lost star catcher Jorge Posada for at least a month.
An MRI revealed that Posada has a hairline fracture in his right foot that will keep him on the bench for at least 3-4 weeks. But Posada says the injury won't keep him out of the lineup for too long.
"It's not going to take that long," he told the New York Post. But he knew the injury was severe.
"I knew something was wrong, because I really couldn't walk the right way," Posada told the Daily News. "I know what a bone bruise is, and those go away in one or two days. I wasn't feeling right. It wasn't hurting where the ball hit me."
He joins several Yankees on the disabled list, including center fielder Curtis Granderson and DH Nick Johnson. Outfielder Nick Swisher is also ailing, with a sore left biceps.
“You hope you don’t get a lot of them at the same time,” Yankee captain Derek Jeter told the New York Times, referring to the rash of injuries plaguing the team. “But you can’t really feel sorry for yourself because the teams we’re playing don’t feel sorry for us.”
The Rays certainly didn't.
They jumped all over starter A.J. Burnett. In the first inning, Jason Bartlett launched Burnett's second pitch for a home run. In the fourth inning, the Rays broke the game open scoring four runs and stealing four bases.
Posada had been batting .326 with six home runs and 14 RBI before the injury. He'll be replaced behind the plate by Francisco Cervelli, who's batting .373 with zero home runs and 17 RBI.
