MANHATTAN — A twice-convicted rapist wept and begged for forgiveness on Thursday, as a Manhattan judge added an additional 12 years to the sentence he's currently serving, the Daily News reported.
Kevin Rios, who is in prison for the 2008 rape of a baby-sitter in Harlem, was photographed smiling as he awaited sentencing for the 2006 gunpoint rape of a 30-year-old prostitute. But his grin turned to tears.
"I don't know what I'd do if that was my sister," Rios blubbered to the court, according to the News.
"I also wish to help others," he added, noting his desire to one day work in a clothing store, the News said.
But Rios' remorseful statement rang hollow.
"I find myself unmoved by Mr. Rios' tears," Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Thomas Farber said, according to the New York Post.
During the trial, the victim recalled Rios telling her that nobody would care that she had been raped because she was a prostitute, the News said.
The prosecutor noted her relief that this was not the case.
"Her words to me were, 'I'm so happy they saw me as a person and not as a prostitute, '" the prosecutor said, according to the paper.
"Because of her courage, her strength and her determination, she's an inspiration to all victims who are afraid to report rape because of her status in society," he added, the News said.
