MAHATTAN — New York baseball fans may soon have reason to oppose Arizona's controversial new immigration law.

The Working Families Party called on the Mets and Yankees Tuesday to boycott the 2011 All-Star game to be held in Arizona, unless the state repeals the legislation.

The influential group sent an e-mail to its 130,000 web supporters Tuesday morning, asking them to sign a letter to the team's owners.

"Without immigrants, New York wouldn't exist, and we wouldn't have two of the greatest baseball teams in the world," the letter, which was addressed to Yankee owner George Steinbrenner and Mets owner Fred Wilpon, said.

"We urge you to take a stand for your players, immigrants and all Americans by publicly pledging not to participate in the 2011 All-Star Game unless it is moved out of Arizona or Arizona repeals its anti-immigrant, anti-American law."

The letter had 3,979 signers by midday Wednesday, Dan Levitan, a spokesman for the group said. Levitan, who had not been contacted by either team, said they would wait for the number to hit 10,000 before sending the letter.

The Major League Baseball Players Association released a statement Friday opposing the law, which they claimed "could have a negative impact on hundreds of Major League players who are citizens of countries other than the United States."

The players union also noted that it would "consider additional steps necessary to protect the rights and interests of our members."
