MANHATTAN — Denzel Washington and Scarlett Johansson were among the many well-known nominees announced Tuesday for the 64th annual Tony Awards.

The Best Actor in a Play category reads like a list of Oscar nominations. It includes Washington (“Fences”), Jude Law (“Hamlet”), Liev Schreiber (“A View from the Bridge”), Christopher Walken (“A Behanding in Spokane) and Alfred Molina ("Red").

Actresses Catherine Zeta-Jones ("A Little Night Music"), Laura Linney ("Time Stands Still") and Johansson ("A View From a Bridge") all received nominations.

The musical “Fela,” produced by Jay-Z and Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, received 11 Tony Award nominations. "Fela" is about Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, who one of the dominant superstars of African music in the 1970s and 1980s and was also known for his songs criticizing the Nigerian military junta.

“American Idiot” is a musical based on the songs of punk pop trio Green Day. It's been nominated for Best Musical, Best Lighting Design in a Musical and Best Scene Design in a Musical.

Among the other top nod-getters were “Red,” a play about Mark Rothko starring Alfred Molina, with seven nominations, and the revivals of the 1983 best musical “La Cage aux Folles” and the 1987 best play “Fences,” with 11 and 10 nominations, respectively.

Actor Jeff Daniels and “Glee” star Lea Michele announced the nominations early Tuesday morning.

The Tony Awards show will take place on June 13 at Radio City Music Hall and will air on CBS. This year’s award show will feature notables from the worlds of rock, hip-hop, and film.
