MANHATTAN — New Yorkers were promised cleaner, more efficient subways Friday when the transit chief announced plans to overhaul the way the stations are run.

"We want cleanliness to be continually improved upon," transit chief Tom Prendergast told the New York Post, before adding a promised to fix the things that "touch the rider."

He said riders would not only be notified on when stations were cleaned,  but would be asked for their input.

"If we're going to spend millions of dollars here, we've got to hear from the customers before and after," he told reporters.

Prendergast said they also plan to hire younger staffers to help improve the subways technology, including adding subway countdown clocks and security cameras.

"Safety goes to the heart of it," he told reporters. "You want to make sure what you're doing isn't making something else worse."
