MANHATTAN — Mark Teixeira broke out of his hitting slump with a home run and Andy Pettitte was brilliant again on the mound as the Yankees completed a sweep of the Texas Rangers with a 5-2 win Sunday at Yankee Stadium.
Teixeira had gone 40 at bats without a home run before blasting a solo shot off Texas starter Rich Harden (0-1) in the third inning to tie the game at 2-2.
“My teammates have been carrying me up to this point,” Teixeira told the Associated Press.
Pettitte (3-0) allowed two runs in eight innings to remain undefeated and increase the Yankees' record to a major league-best 9-3.
"Winning's just fun, man," Pettitte told the Daily News. "It feels good to feel like we're going to go out and win on a daily basis and fortunately that's what we have here."
Teixeira hit 39 home runs last season, but the Yankees first baseman is no stranger to slow starts. Teixeira, who is hitting .114, hit only three home runs and batted .200 last April before hitting 13 home runs in May.
The Yankees also got a key 2-run single from back up shortstop Ramiro Pena who was in the lineup in place of Derek Jeter, who missed the game with a head cold.
The Yankees are off Monday before heading out West to start a nine-game road trip beginning with three games against the Los Angeles Angels.
