MANHATTAN — Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees welcomed back former teammate Hideki Matsui as they got their World Series rings on Tuesday before the team's home opener against the Los Angels Angels at Yankee Stadium.
Matsui, the World Series MVP, was greeted by cheers of "MVP! MVP!" from Yankee fans and was embraced by his teammates on the field after getting his ring.
For Jeter and teammates Andy Pettitte, who's pitching against the Angels, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera, the ring is the fifth in their championship collection. The rings were handed out by Yankees legends Yogi Berra and Whitey Ford during a pregame ceremony.
“A few years ago, I built a little display case in my den for the rings,” Pettitte told the New York Times. “I’ve never actually worn them.”

Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth performed the National Anthem, and Yankee great Bernie Williams threw out the first pitch.
The Yanks' opened their campaign for their 28th World Series championship on the road, going 4-2 heading into Tuesday's home opener.
