MANHATTAN — The New York Yankees got their first late inning heroics of the season Wednesday night when newly-acquired outfielder Curtis Granderson hit a solo shot in the 10th inning to lead the Bronx Bombers to a 3-1 win over the hated Boston Red Sox.

Granderson led off the 10th with the blast off Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon. The win gives the Yanks their first series victory of the season, as they took two games from the Sox this week after a dismal opening night on Sunday.

"Just to win the series, it's definitely a good thing," Granderson said, the Daily News reported. "I'm just trying to help the team out, be another small piece of the puzzle. I'm happy to be a part of it."

The centerfielder got off to a good start this season going 4-for-12 with two home runs, two RBIs and a stolen base against Boston.

Manager Joe Girardi said he told Granderson when he came to New York to just be himself. "So far [Granderson] has reacted well," Girardi told the New York Post.

Yankee Captain Derek Jeter also had a hit in the game, the only one provided by the first four batters in the line up Wednesday night. The quartet of Jeter, Nick Johnson, Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez went 1 for 15.

Up next for the Yanks are the Tampa Bay Rays. They send Javier Vazquez to the hill Friday night at Tropicana Field.
