MANHATTAN — The city is looking to expand pedestrian plazas, like the ones in Times and Herald squares that restrict traffic, to other parts of Manhattan.
DNAinfo went to the East Side of Manhattan, which the Department of Transportation has identified as being in need of green space, to get residents' thoughts on the plan.
“This neighborhood needs more green space,” said Mike Visceglia, 55, of Kips Bay. “It’s probably a better prescription for better living.”
The DOT is looking to partner with community nonprofits for the NYC Plaza Program, and will host an info session in Manhattan at 55 Water Street on Wednesday. The groups have until June 30 to submit a proposal.
In selecting sites, the city will have to work to balance creating an urban oasis with their impact on traffic.
“We have to be careful not to overshoot and have too many of these areas that then are going to negatively impact your ability to get around the city,” said Beth Duthie, 58, of Brooklyn, while taking a break at the Herald Square plaza.
