MANHATTAN — A new survey by the Straphangers Campaign confirms what many New Yorkers already know — many service announcements in the subways are indecipherable.

The report found that while more than 80 percent of basic announcements by MTA were audible and accurate, 55 percent of announcements regarding service disruptions or delays were inaudible, incorrect, or never even made.

Announcements were not made at all in 26 percent of the cases. They were incorrect 27 percent of the time and 2 percent of the time service announcements were not made at all.

"We're glad basic subway car announcements are improving, but disappointed most riders are being left in the dark to cope with delays and reroutings,” said Cate Contino, Campaign coordinator who oversaw the survey.

The survey found that the 4, 5, 6, L, M and N lines were the best in making basic announcements.
