MANHATTAN — Half of New Yorkers are in favor of legalizing medical marijuana in the state, a new poll released Monday said.

The Siena Research Institute poll said that 50 percent of New Yorkers state wide supported legalization for medial purposes. It also said 41 percent of those polled were opposed and 9 percent didn't have enough information.

Demographically, 54 percent of men and 46 percent of women polled were in favor of medical marijuana. Democrats were more in favor of legalization, with 55 percent backing the idea with 34 percent opposing. In contrast, 59 percent of state Republicans were against pot.

A slim majority, just 51 percent, of New York City residents supported medicinal marijuana, while the suburban New Yorkers were 57 percent and upstate residents were 44 percent in support.

“Democrats and independents, downstaters, young, white and Jewish voters support it," said Siena pollster Steven Greenberg, in a statement. "Republicans, upstaters, older voters, and African American, Catholic and Protestant voters oppose it.”
