MANHATTAN — Former City Councilman and one-time city comptroller candidate David Yassky has been chosen to head up the Taxi and Limousine Commission.
“David is the right guy for the job,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said during his weekly radio show on Friday, when he made the announcement.
Bloomberg highlighted Yassky's efforts to introduce fuel-efficient taxis to the city during his time with the Council.
If the Council approves the nomination, Yassky will replace outgoing Commissioner Matthew Daus, who has served as chairman and commissioner of the TLC for the last eight years. Daus announced last month he would not seek reappointment.
The opportunity comes after Yassky’s failed run for the comptroller seat last year, which was won by former Councilmember John Liu.
The TLC licenses and regulates more that 50,000 vehicles, including 12,237 yellow cabs and 100,000 drivers, according to the mayor's office.
