UPPER EAST SIDE — Emily's List, a group that helps elect pro-choice Democratic women running for Congress and governor, has endorsed Rep. Carolyn Maloney in the Upper East Side's congressional race.

Maloney has been fighting for the women's vote against another pro-choice Democrat, insurgent Reshma Saujani.

"Emily's List is synonymous with grassroots organizing that spurs the development of strong women leaders with principled core values — the same values that are a central part of my agenda in Washington," Maloney said in a statement.

Maloney has already received support from the Women's Campaign Forum and Planned Parenthood Advocates of New York for her work on the Debbie Smith Act and other legislation.

Congress authorized the Smith act, which Maloney wrote, in 2004 to provide funding for the processing of rape kits to track down perpetrators.

Emily's List cited Maloney's work for equal pay for women in their endorsement decision.

The group is also backing Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

“It’s no surprise when an incumbent is endorsed by an organization with a track record of endorsing incumbents, even when the challenger is pro choice,” a spokesperson for Saujani's campaign said of the endorsement.

The endorsement by Emily's List, one of the most important women's political group, follows a recent split in an important Upper East Side Democratic women's club, the Eleanor Roosevelt committee.

A handful of followers of Hilary Clinton have also started to throw their weight behind Saujani, including Maureen White, a top fundraiser for the Democrats.
