MANHATTAN — Mayor Michael Bloomberg doesn’t see what the fuss is over having Attorney General Andrew Cuomo investigate Gov. David Paterson’s involvement in an aide’s domestic abuse case.

“He asked Andrew Cuomo to investigate, his choice,” the mayor said at an unrelated afternoon press conference on Monday. “There isn’t any conflict.”

Paterson asked Cuomo to look into allegations that both he and state police improperly intervened in aide David Johnson’s domestic violence case. The governor spoke to Johnson’s alleged victim the day before she was due in court, leading to speculation that the governor’s call was the reason she did not return to court and the case was dropped, according to several reports by the New York Times.

Some elected politicians have argued that Cuomo’s political aspirations — he is a likely candidate for governor — make it too difficult for him to conduct an impartial investigation.

But according a poll released Monday, voters, including the mayor, believe Cuomo can do a fair job by a 57-38 percent margin.
