MANHATTAN — Animal shelters around Manhattan are feeling the impact of the city's budget cuts, as they are struggling to provide canned food for their animals.
The New York City Animal Care and Control (AC&C) functions on a contract with the city Health Department and is being forced to eliminate $300,000 from its budget by June, the Daily News reported. It has to cut approximately an additional $400,000 in the next fiscal year.
The nonprofit, which is the largest pet rescue and adoption agency in the northeast, runs shelters throughout the city. It is asking for the public's help for donations to help pay for canned dog and cat food, the paper said.
Donations of towels, blankets, rubber toys, and kitty litter are also being accepted, the News reported.
Those who would like to donate are being asked to call 212-788-4000 or donate online at http://www.nycacc.org/.
