HERALD SQUARE — A fire at Macy's had shoppers streaming out of the famed department store and into the street Wednesday.
The fire was caused by faulty electrical equipment in the basement, and was quickly brought under control, according to the FDNY.
There were no injuries reported.
Firefighters evacuated the Seventh Avenue side of the store as they battled the blaze that broke out at about 12:15 p.m., a police officer on the scene told DNAinfo.
"I was looking at pants on the first floor when we were told to exit the building, so my wife and I left," said Jeff Chonne of N.J. "Once we were across the street, we saw that people were going in and out of the store down the block, so we went back in another entrance. The men's side is still closed, so I guess I won't be getting any pants."
Shoppers filed out of the exit after being evacuated from the Herald Square store.
Inside Macy's, shoppers' reactions were mixed.
"Trapped at macy's! There's a fire! FREAKING OUT," tweeted chrispreyssas.
Rosanna Smith, who was visiting New York from England, said she continued shopping.
"People seem to be scared in there, it’s at a total standstill inside," she said. "The escalators are stopped and people are just standing everywhere not knowing what do."
But that didn't deter the 17-year-old from racking up some merchandise.
“It's our last day here," Smith said. "We were going to go to Macy's whatever it took.”
