MANHATTAN — The next victim of New York City's budget woes? Parades.
The NYPD has ordered that parade routes must be shortened by 25 percent due to planned budget cuts in the police force.
According to the department’s estimates, the cuts in the length of parade routes will save $3.1 million for the cash-strapped NYPD.
The cuts, which are due to take effect after April 1 will cut routes of some of the most famous parades, including the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
A Macy’s spokesman told the Associated Press that parade organizers — who changed the route last year as well to accommodate new traffic patterns on Broadway — are working with police to figure out how the new rules will impact their parade route.
Under the new edict, not only must routes be made shorter, but no parade is allowed to exceed five hours.
