CENTRAL PARK — There was just no way a four-week-old ear infection was going to keep Rudy out of the snow today.

He sniffed, he shoveled and he rolled in the white stuff that by midday was well on the way to being a foot deep in Central Park.

"He was watching out the window this morning," said Danielle Gervais, the proud master of Rudy. "He smells it, i think."

One thing that dog owners would all agree on is that their best friends love snow. As many griped about the inconvenience caused by the blizzard that had descended on New York City, dog owners knew there would be no way they'd be allowed to stay inside — their pooches would be insisting on multiple walks.

Dr. Kimberly Whitfield from the Westside Veterinary Center at 220 W. 83rd St. said there is no medical reason for the love affair.

"Because they are kids at heart, they have a youthful heart," she said.

Whitfield said sometimes the very small dogs, which are sensitive and particular, cannot handle snow. Dogs can also mimic their master's likes and dislikes.

"So many of our companions have taken on our characteristics, they feed off us," Whitfield said.

Diane Moriarty, a dog walker, was on a snow patrol with her client, Tommy, who is only a little higher then the snow cover.

"It's true. They love the snow, but hate the rain," she said. "He has been doing doggy snow angels."

Whatever the reason, Rudy and Tommy, decked out in their special snow dog attire, were having a field day along with all their canine friends.

"We might has well be married with a kid with this dog," said Gervais, with her boyfriend, Bret Puchir, as Rudy led her over to a fresh patch of snow.
