MANHATTAN — Meteorologists have backed away somewhat from their earlier snow forecast for Manhattan. The city is now expected to get one to four inches of snow, instead of the three to six inches forecasted earlier this week.

New York will be on the fringe of the storm, which will move into the area Friday evening. Northern parts of the city are expected to get little or no snow; southern areas, including Staten Island and Brooklyn, could see several inches.

Driving conditions could be messy especially as winds increase, but the storm is expected clear out by Saturday afternoon.

The storm will cause major problems for millions of people in the mid-Atlantic states as it dumps as much as two feet of snow on cities including Washington D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia.

Airlines in these heaviest hit cities have already started cancelling flights.
