CENTRAL PARK — Snow has been piling up in one section of Manhattan all week, but it has nothing to do with the upcoming snow storm heading our way.

Workers have been making snow in Central Park for days in preparation for several winter sports activities planned for this weekend's Winter Jam.

A 15-foot snow ramp was constructed along with several snow rails at the Bandshell Area of the park for Saturday's "Rail Jam" competition.

The competition, which begins at 1 p.m., features 100 experienced snowboarding riders performing their best tricks for a panel of judges.

"It's cool the city is bringing in the snow and raising awareness about winter sports especially before the Olympics," said professional snowboarder Pat Moore, who will judge Saturday's event.

Winter Jam is loaded with activities for novice winter athletes too. Skiiing, snowboarding and snowshoe lessons will be given in a snowfield created near the ramp site.

“This is a great event that is free to the public and exhibits some great winter sports, last years event drew over 10,000 spectators so we are excited about this weekend,” said Deputy Parks Commissioner Bob Garafola, who was on site while the course was being built.

The 15-foot ramp required 100 cubic yards of snow to make about a three foot base for the snowboarders, said Bill Benneyan, who was brought in from the Mountain Creek ski resort in New Jersey to help set up the event.

“The snowstorm coming in won’t effect us either way but the blanket sure makes everything feel better,”  Benneyan said.

Forecasters are calling for up to four inches of snow to fall in Manhattan on Friday and Saturday.
