MANHATTAN — Firefighters rescued three people from a raging fire at Madison Avenue and E. 127 Street in Harlem on Monday, including two who were hanging from the windows.
The fire began in a vacant building a little after 4 p.m. Firefighters had it under control in about an hour, according to NY1.
For onlookers, it was a dramatic scene. When firefighters arrived, they saw two people hanging out a fifth floor window of the building.
"They were ready to jump," FDNY Deputy Chief Jim Hodgens told reporters.
Firefighter Al Grdovich told the Daily News that the woman who was saved from the window thanked God as she was rescued.
"I believe God was on her side," Grdovich told the News.
A third woman rescued from the building had gone into cardiac arrest, the News reported. She was awake by the time she arrived at Harlem hospital, NY1 reported.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
