MANHATTAN — Mark Sanchez, the Jets rookie quarterback sensation who led them to the cusp of the Super Bowl, is considering offseason knee surgery.

The elective surgery on his left knee would fix a ligament that stabilizes the patella, several news outlets reported. He originally hurt the knee in 2008, while he was still the quarterback for USC, when he dislocated his kneecap.

"It's Mark's decision," Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum said of the surgery, the New York Post reported.

“I would just say there may have been some small tweaks along the way, but if there’s any procedure, it won’t be anything significant,” Tannenbaum told the New York Times. “It’s going to be much more preventive, strengthening, things like that.”

Tannenbaum said Sanchez will be ready in time for training camp.

Sanchez's right knee is balky as well, but that will be taken care of without surgery. He sprained that knee while sliding in a Dec. 3 game against the Buffalo Bills, a few days after he received sliding lessons from Yankee manager Joe Girardi, the Daily News reported.

The Jets QB visited James Andrews, a noted orthopedist, in Birmingham, Ala., this week to have his knees checked out, the News said.

Sanchez will likely get a third opinion before he actually goes under the knife.
