Stephen Colbert Weighs in on New York Senate Race

The true purveyor of late night news, Stephen Colbert, weighed in on the New York Senate race on "The Colbert Report" last night.

Colbert complimented the gutsiness of Harold Ford Jr., the state's potential U.S. Senate candidate, pointing out that if he runs it will be "in the New York City media capital of the world, where they keep all of those little bits of tape of what you said and did.”

“Hell there’s a whole newspaper page dedicated to what people do,” Colbert continued as a graphic of Page Six flashed on the screen.  “Get a little huffy with the maître d at Per Se and this time tomorrow, they’re picking bits of you out of Cindy Adams’ stool.”

Ford has never been on Colbert’s show, but he appeared on Jon Stewart’s "The Daily Show" in November of 2002. At the time of that appearance, the then-32-year-old Tennessee congressman had just lost the minority leadership post to Nancy Pelosi.

“I thought it was time to try something different, just like in baseball when the manager has different players,” he said when Stewart asked why, at such a young age, he believed he was qualified to be the leader of the House Democrats.

“Democrats in the House are good, hardworking, smart people, but if the manager can’t win, you move on.”

In that appearance, he also defended his vote for freezing a proposed tax cut for the wealthiest Americans and his support for the tax vacation proposed by the Democrats that month.
