MANHATTAN — New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli announced Thursday that the state is ending the year in the red for the first time in recent history.

"New York State is ringing in the new year in a tenuous financial position," said DiNapoli.

"This cash crunch — and the deficit that still has not been fully addressed — could have been avoided if New York had adopted a more realistic budget last April."

The state had approximately $506 million in cash Dec. 31 with nearly $806 million in payments due.

DiNapoli urged the state to make a New Year's resolution to "make better budget decisions."
