MANHATTAN — Giants quarterback Eli Manning apologized to New Yorkers Monday for his team's embarrassing performance that ended their season on the weekend.

"I apologize. I'm sorry. I wish I had an answer," Manning told the Associated Press Monday.

"I wish we could have come out and played better football. I don't have the answer to why it happened or why it has happened kind of throughout the season where we have been up and down in our play."

The Giants lost 41-9 in a shocker to the Carolina Panthers Sunday in their last game ever in their current stadium. The loss marked a season turnaround that began on a high note of a 5-0 record.

"I do think the one thing that I want to say to our fans is that, to a man, we'd like to apologize for yesterday," coach Tom Coughlin also told AP.

"I think that for whatever reason a team that had an awful lot to play for, that had opportunities there, that was playing in Giants Stadium for the last regular-season game, didn't play up to our capabilities. It's been a very frustrating thing."

The Giants have now disappointed fans in four out of the five seasons. The exception, of course, being the 2007 Super Bowl win.
