MANHATTAN — A two-car crash on the West Side Highway near 125th Street has snarled the morning commute into Manhattan.
One vehicle traveling north jumped the guardrail, flipped over and landed on the southbound side of the highway, according to news reports. Traffic was reportedly backed up to Westchester County.
“It was reported that a car gong north jumped the divider and wound up in the southbound lanes of traffic,” FDNY spokesman James Long told the New York Times. “It was reported to be only two cars involved; in the immediate accident it was two cars, but it is potentially more cars involved.”
Three people were taken to St. Luke's Hospital, the Times reported. One was in critical condition, according to Eyewitness News.
Long told the paper two of the victims had multiple injuries. One victim had apparently been thrown from a vehicle. There were “no reports of fatalities at this moment,” Long told the paper.
The crash temporarily closed all southbound lanes as emergency personnel responded to the accident that occurred around 7 a.m.
One lane on the southbound side remained closed during the morning rush. Rubbernecking delays were reported on the northbound side, but after temporary closure of one lane, all lanes were operating normally.
Traffic was also heavy on Riverside Drive as drivers looked to bypass the accident.
