MANHATTAN — New York is on pace to hit a record low 457 murders this year, according to the New York Police Department. The previous low was 497 in 2000.

Through Friday, the city recorded 325 murders for 2009, the Associated Press reported.

With an average six homicides per 100,000 people, New York has one of the lowest murder rates in the United States.

Worldwide, Tokyo logs the lowest murder rate with one homicide per 100,000 and London follows with two per 100,000, the AP wrote.

Recent budget cuts have somewhat thinned staffing levels in the NYPD but overall crime is still down 40 percent from the same time last year, according to the AP.
