LOWER MANHATTAN — A worker was seriously hurt after Friday falling at a Downtown construction site, fire and buildings officials said.

The worker, who was helping to build a new 21-story hotel at 24 John St., fell into an underground area of the site about 1 p.m., the FDNY said.

"This is the first time I've seen anything like this in all of these months," said Danny Priester, 25, a traffic control officer who was on his lunch break when the worker fell.

The worker, who was not identified, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in serious condition, fire officials said.

The future 90-room hotel is one of five construction projects on the narrow John Street block. Residents have complained about noise and safety issues on the projects.

There are five construction projects on one block of John Street, including a future hotel at 24 John St. where a worker fell April 13, 2012.
