MANHATTAN — Last week's warm sunny weather felt like a distant memory Thursday morning after New York was pelted with hail, sleet and snow overnight.

Thunderstorms rolled into the area Wednesday evening as hail pelted all five boroughs of the city and lightning lit up the night sky.

"Thunder and freezing rain. Nice combo. #NYC," NY1 host Pat Kiernan tweeted.

The weather didn't get much better Thursday morning as many early risers woke up to see a light blanket of snow on the ground before the sun came up.

The snow quickly melted on the sidewalks in some parts of Manhattan as temperatures hovered around 32 degrees and the snow fall turned into a light rain.

The wintry mix of snow and rain made for icy road conditions for morning commuters. A traffic advisory was issued on the upper level of the George Washington Bridge because of slippery road conditions.

Several accidents and spinouts were reported, including a two-car accident on the FDR drive near Houston Street at 6:12 a.m, the FDNY said. A passenger was removed from a white minivan and taken to Bellevue Hospital with minor injuries, fire officials said.

Temperatures were expected to reach a high of 44 degrees Thursday afternoon, according to Accuweather. Forecasters said the precipitation would move out of the area during the evening with temperatures dropping into the 20s Thursday night.

Forecasters called for temperatures in the 30s and 40s this weekend with a chance of rain or snow on Sunday.
