MANHATTAN — The city said on Friday that it will work through the weekend to clear the roads in time for school Monday morning.

Students across the Manhattan and the five boroughs got a surprise snow day on Friday when a major storm dumped more than a foot of snow on the city.

"I want to get those schools opened up," Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty said at a press conference Friday at a department garage in the Meatpacking District. "I want to get those buses in there."

And while students got a free day off — the second snow day this year but just the fourth in the last six years — Chancellor Joel Klein had a message for students.

"We are encouraging all our kids to do a little extra homework this weekend," Klein said at the press conference.

Shuma Saito didn't get the word schools were closed until he arrived at P.S. 41 in Greenwich Village.

All New York City public schools are closed on Friday as a Nor'Easter continued to batter the area.

Klein and Mayor Michael Bloomberg explained during the press conference that the city didn't close schools on Thursday because the storm unexpectely worsened overnight, prompting the abrupt about-face.

"The forecast when I went to bed looked like we would be able to [keep schools open]," Bloomberg said. "But in the morning when the snowfall was heavier, we did what we're supposed to do."

"I'm sorry, things happen," Bloomberg said.

The last minute announcement came shortly after 5 a.m., just before parents and kids were to get ready for school. But not everyone heard the news in time.

Maki Saito watched the news just before the Dept. of Education announced the school closures, and took her son, 3rd grader Shuma, off to P.S. 41 on Sixth Avenue and W. 11th Street.

DNAinfo was there to capture the joyful moment when Shuma found out he had a snow day.

"Everybody step aside, it's closed!" he shouted as he marched away from the school.

The storm had already dumped 10.6 inches of snow on Manhattan as of Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service.  More snow was expected throughout the day.

Alternate side parking rules also have been suspended because of the storm.

A Brooklyn man was killed on Thursday in Central Park by a falling tree branch knocked loose by the storm.

Most of the boroughs colleges and universities cancelled classes on Friday because of the storm.
