UNION SQUARE — A woman caught on video snatching a backpack left unattended on a bench in the Union Square subway station has been hit with two felony charges for theft, according to prosecutors.

Genevieve Bartow-Popovitz, 36, of Staten Island, picked up a backpack and wallet containing three credit cards from a bench shortly after midnight on May 31, according to police and prosecutors.

The belongings had been accidentally left on the bench by a 30-year-old woman who boarded a southbound 4 train, then realized her mistake and came back to the platform to find the bag and wallet missing, police said.

Police soon after released surveillance footage of Bartow-Popovitz pocketing the wallet and walking off with the bag.

She was cuffed June 2 and charged with one count of grand larceny in the fourth degree and one count of criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree, court records show.

She was released without bail and is due back in court June 12, records show.

Bartow-Popovitz's attorney did not return requests for comment.
