LOWER EAST SIDE — A man viciously pummeled a 61-year-old woman near Sara D. Roosevelt Park early Saturday morning, slamming her head against the pavement and repeatedly kicking her as she lay motionless, leaving her with bleeding in her brain, according to police and prosecutors.

Devin Brown, 24, approached the woman near the park's derelict storehouse at Forsyth and Stanton streets around 6 a.m., when he knocked her to the ground with a punch, prosecutors charge.

Surveillance footage shows Brown digging through the woman's pockets, then repeatedly kicking and punching her as she lay motionless on the ground, according to the Manhattan District Attorney's office.

Brown lay on top of the woman as he punched her repeatedly and slammed her head against the ground, police said.

The beating was brought to an end by a passing Good Samaritan, who saw Brown beating the woman and yelled at him, causing him to flee, police said. Officers canvassed the area and cuffed Brown shortly after.

Brown has been charged with several counts of assault and one count of attempted robbery, court records show. He is being held at a Rikers Island facility on $500,000 bail and is due back in court May 25, Department of Correction records show.

His Legal Aid attorney declined to comment when reached by phone.

The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital with bleeding in her brain and was intubated Saturday evening, police and prosecutors said. Police were not able to provide an update on the victim's status Tuesday.
