QUEENS — A screwdriver-wielding man was fatally shot by police during a struggle behind a Springfield Gardens home Saturday morning, NYPD officials said.

Jahlire Nicholson, 28, was holding onto his mother, 55, and threatening her in the rear basement stairwell of a Westgate Street home near Thurston Street about 2:30 a.m., when police arrived after getting a call of a woman screaming in the area, police said.

Officers ordered Nicholson to drop the screwdriver and tried to disarm him when he refused, police said.

During the struggle, Nicholson let go of his mother, but not the screwdriver and two officers each fired a single shot, police said.

Nicholson was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital, police said.
