QUEENS — The Jackson Heights Orchestra kicks off its fifth season with a performance of a piece written specifically for the neighborhood.

The concert will be held Wednesday, Dec. 14 at St. Mark's Church, 33-50 82nd St., beginning at 7:30 p.m.

To celebrate the launch of the season, the orchestra's director, Pat Glunt, commissioned a piece of music from composer Peri Mauer.

"All Along the Heights" is an energetic piece that captures the rhythms of Jackson Heights," Glunt said.

The concert will also include a clarinet concerto from soloist Thomas Piercy, who has played around the world; a performance of J.S Bach's Chorale Preclude and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's symphony #35, better known as the "Haffner."

The performance is supported by the Jackson Heights Beautification Group with financial support from the Decentralization Program, a grant program of the New York State Council on the Arts.

The orchestra, made up of musicians from across the five boroughs and Long Island, is still looking for members to join, especially those who play oboe, bassoon and trombone, organizers said.

There are two more spring concerts scheduled.
