UPPER WEST SIDE — While West Siders voted in large numbers for Hillary Clinton in the presidential election, votes for Donald Trump,  third party and unnamed candidates cut into her margins within a democratic stronghold.

In two assembly districts that together span from West 41st Street up to West 125th Street, more than 1,000 voters were unhappy with any of the choices on the ballot last Tuesday. In Assembly District 67 and 69 combined, 1,131 people wrote in their own candidate.

A portion of voters chose to go the third party route, casting votes for Green Party Candidate Jill Stein or Libertarian Party Candidate Gary Johnson. Pundits and Clinton supporters have blamed Stein and Johnson for spoiling the election.

In the 67th Assembly District,  which includes parts of Hell's Kitchen and the vast majority of the Upper West Side, nearly four percent of voters — 3.86 percent — chose another candidate over Clinton or Trump.

Johnson, the former governor of New Mexico, outperformed Stein in the 67th Assembly District, picking up 943 votes.

Stein, a physician and activist, got 681 votes in the 67th district, twenty more votes than the number of write-ins.

In the 69th Assembly District, which includes the eastern half of the West 80s, the West 90s, and the West 100s up to 125th Street, Stein did better. She got 907 votes, as compared to Johnson's 665 votes.

Additionally, there were 470 write-ins in this district. In total, 3.7 percent of the votes in the 69th district went to neither Clinton nor Trump.
