THE BRONX — Police shot and wounded a man in Longwood Tuesday afternoon, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

Zachary Irizarry, 19, was shot in the leg near East 164th Street and Reverend James A. Polite Avenue about 1 p.m., the spokeswoman said.

A sergeant and police officer were on patrol in the area when they saw Irizarry and several other people arguing as they came out of 862 E. 164th St., according to the NYPD.

When the officers approached, he fired gunshots in their direction, and the officers fired back and hit him in the leg, police said.

Irizarry then fled the scene with two others, and the officers pursued them, catching two people in an apartment at 911 E. 165th St., police said.

Irizarry was taken to Lincoln Hospital in stable condition with a graze wound to his right hip and left knee, and the officers were taken to Jacobi Hospital for observation, according to the NYPD.

The NYPD's Force Investigation Division is looking into the incident, and Irizarry has been arrested for attempted assault, police said.
