THE BRONX — A woman was gunned down in the middle of the street in Melrose Wednesday afternoon, police and witnesses said, with sources saying she may not have been the intended victim.

Maribel Cavero-Reyes, 45, was walking down the middle of East 154th Street between Melrose and Elton avenues when she was fatally shot about 12:40 p.m., according to a witness and an NYPD spokeswoman.

Cavero-Reyes screamed before collapsing on the asphalt, according to witness Alejandro Almonte, 41.

Police arrived on the scene a little before 1 p.m., and said Cavero-Reyes had been shot in the torso. She was pronounced dead at Lincoln Medical Center, the spokeswoman said.

Police believe a shot was fired a block away at East 154th Street and Courtlandt Avenue, and after a some type of chase, another shot was fired and struck Cavero-Reyes, a police source said. It is unclear at this time how many people were involved in the original altercation.

Manie Rivera, 32, came out of his home and saw emergency workers on the scene trying to resuscitate the woman.

Rivera said it was "crazy" a shooting happened on his block.
