UPPER EAST SIDE — A thief snatched a wallet from a 73-year-old woman's purse while she was shopping at Gristedes, the NYPD said.

The suspect approached the woman from behind at about 3 p.m. Wednesday as she was shopping at the 1343 Lexington Ave. grocery store, near 89th Street, and snatched her wallet out of her purse, police said.

He took lottery tickets and $25 from the wallet before ditching it inside the store and fleeing in an unknown direction, authorities said.

The thief was described by police as about 40 years old and standing between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10. He was seen wearing a blue button-up shirt, dark jeans and sneakers.

A surveillance photo released by the NYPD shows the man in glasses, looking into a frozen food freezer next to a grocery cart.

Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
