RED HOOK — Red Hook is gearing up for an electric ride.

The world's first all-electric racing series is heading to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal next year for the inaugural New York City ePrix in July 2017, the city and Formula E announced Wednesday.

The races, which will take place over two days as part of the FIA Formula E Championship, will be the first FIA-sanctioned open-wheel race to take place in the city.

“New York City is where technology, sustainability and commerce all connect. There’s no better home for the ePrix," Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement.

"Bringing this international event to the five boroughs is a huge win for New York City. It will bring thousands of visitors, boost Brooklyn tourism and spur investment in our neighborhoods."

The single-seat electric cars will speed their way through a 1.947 kilometer, or 1.21 mile, off-street circuit at Brooklyn Cruise Terminal and Pier 11, with a backdrop of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.

“To race in New York City is a historic moment — not only for Formula E, but for motorsport in general — and again highlights the philosophy of Formula E to bring fully-electric racing to the world’s greatest cities,” Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E, said in a statement.

Formula E plans to make a significant investment for infrastructure improvements at Brooklyn Cruise Terminal as well as work with the city on hiring locally, partnering with small businesses and hotels, giving students the chance to learn about engineering, technology and automotive trades, according to a press release.

According to the Associated Press, Formula E is not receiving city or state financial support and will rely on corporate sponsors.

Formula E currently holds races in cities, such as Hong Kong, Marrakesh, Buenos Aires, Monaco, Paris and Montreal.
