UPPER EAST SIDE — A man tried to pull a fast one on Whole Foods employees this week by hiding an expensive cut of fish in a cake box, police said.

The 56-year-old man was caught on surveillance video in the Whole Foods at 1551 Third Ave. putting a $48 sea bass filet into a "cake by the pound" box between 8:45 and 9:28 p.m. on Monday.

The weight of the fish, disguised in the box as a piece of cake, came out to $4, and the man paid the price and tried to walk out of the store, according to authorities.

Store staff saw the man hiding the fish through surveillance video and stopped him before he could leave.

The man was arrested then and given a desk appearance ticket, requiring him to go to court on a certain date.

A representative for Whole Foods did not immediately return a request for comment.
