NEW YORK CITY — Bill Bratton isn't pulling any punches.

The outgoing NYPD commissioner took shots at presidential candidate Donald Trump Wednesday on "CBS This Morning," saying that while the Republican nominee portrays himself as a "tough guy," "I wonder if he's ever actually taken a punch in his life, an actual physical punch?"

Bratton's comments came while discussing support for Trump among veterans, a day after the candidate told a crowd in Virginia that an Iraq war veteran gave him his Purple Heart.

"As a veteran, a Vietnam veteran, I'm amazed that veteran groups are so charmed by him," Bratton said, calling the Purple Heart incident "appalling."

The commissioner, who announced Tuesday his plan to step down from his post next month, also said Trump "scares the hell out of me" while noting his "lack of depth on issues."

"I'm always amazed by people that are portrayed as tough guys or portray themselves as tough," he said.

"It's easy being tough. It's a lot tougher being soft and understanding when you need to be soft," he added, referencing Trump's ongoing spat with the family of a Muslim soldier killed in Iraq

"There's no compassion there. It's all about him and never about anyone else."
